My soldering io ren is a basic unit. It plugs in, gets hot - way too hot- and burns everything it tou ches . It also has no control or anywhere to put it, or clean it, or whatever. Not that I use it very often, but when I do, I want it to not be a problem. So I treated myself to a good one.

I once knew a guy who had an amazing tool set. He was an amazing mechanic. He built drag bikes, among other things, when he felt like it and I think was working up a twin-turbo V-max. I figured out that when he needed a tool, he got the best one for that specific job, and used it, and put it away clean and cared for and ready for whenever he needed it again a decade later. If I keep going like this, I’m probably going to be that guy in the future, without the drag bikes.

Fancy! I have a decent Weller iron but not a good station and not with adjustable temp. Even when I was a electronics tech in the Navy I didn’t have equipment that nice. Luckily the boards in our equipment were pretty robust and could take some heat without damage.

Those are so cool. If I had a more stationary work spot I would pick one up. I tend to do most of my soldering either on a work cart, or in the vehicle itself!

I have one of those X-Tronic units, decent iron. Good choice.

I dunno. I’m weird. These pencil irons with the pointy plated tips (I guess that’s what they are) just don’t do it for me. For 30 years I’ve been using a 25-watt unregulated soldering iron with a solid copper chisel point tip. I like cleaning and filing off the detritus of previous work and then tinning the fresh copper. I don’t really solder that much, but it is my preferred iron.

I have used a temperature regulated station recently and it was OK...I eventually got the hang of it. It was a cheap Chinese unit. I much would prefer to have a nice Weller station like I had when I was in school. It was almost perfect but I never thought of buying one , as I just don’t do that much work. But the Weller was awesome when I was hand soldering the boards that made up my grad school project. (Each board had 3600 through-holes and I must have soldered up 15 or 20 of them).

Fawn-say! I approve of this tool acquisition strategy :)

The Weller stations are not reviewing well. Takes many many minutes to get hot and return to temp. This unit rated higher, fast heat and regulates well. Comes with other tips.
